Redevelopment plans afoot in Stockwell

Lambeth Council go ahead with regeneration and enhancement programme

Lambeth Council have approved final proposals that will mean big changes for Stockwell.

The proposals will mean large-scale improvements to road safety, the environment and will improve some of the area’s streets.

Let’s take a look at some of the specifics:

Stockwell Square

The Stockwell Partnership, who we recently interviewed here on this blog, have put together proposals to redesign Stockwell Square.  They are working with DSDHA Architects to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists as well as create a market square on Binfield Street between the tube station and NatWest bank.  The new square should be open by spring 2014.

Local Environment

After considerable consultation with the local community, Lambeth Council are to make two key environmental improvements.

The first is to plant more trees on pavements.  Lambeth Council say there will be parklets, more trees and raised planters.

The second is that there will be some trees in existing parking spaces by building them  along the curbs.  This should reduce traffic speed and give more greenery along some of Stockwell’s roads, they say.

Road Safety

Road safety also lies at the heart of Lambeth Council’s redevelopment plans for Stockwell.  They plan to create a 20 mph zone to tackle speeding vehicles and make life easier for cyclists and pedestrians.  Cyclists will also be pleased to read that cyclist-friendly road humps will come in to force too.

Speed lozenges will be introduced to cushion noise and vibration.  New one-way systems will also be brought for Wyvil Road and Miles Street, which will open up Miles Street to through traffic.

A yellow box junction is also to be introduced at the junction between Wandsworth Road and Landsdowne Way.

Most of these changes should be in place by spring 2014.
